I weigh popularity with prominence and impact I guess. Taker main evented WM13, multiple big fours, the highest rated match in Raw history, etc.

Personally I'll take Kane over Taker or Gaytch back then. But he was hardly in the main event, his entire character was being Taker's Jannetty, he had a 1 day reign, and while Gaytch and Taker were shitting up the main event he was stuck tagging with X-Pac.

You MAY be able to argue he’s tier 2 when he returns after Rock absolutely explodes in 99-2000 but I would still say Rock,Austin and Vince were the real big 3 of thr Attitude Era. Bullshit. The plan has been Austin since shortly after Wrestlemania 13. Tagging with Shawn and Foley to slowly turn him face. By SummerSlam he was fully face.

If Bret stays is that he has Shawn's spot at 14 and the Mr McMahon character probably doesn't become what it did. At least not for a while.

But they didn't. Vince's reason for letting Bret go is that he essentially wasn't worth the money he was paying him. He told Bret the company couldn't afford him, but if their grand plan was to give Bret the Austin push, then you think they'd just cut some more chaff to keep a guy who wanted to stay with the company and who they believed would've drawn them money.

But he main evented 13. First HOAC with Shawn. HOAC with Foley, Taker vs Kane (and Kane's entire character), Ministry of Darkness, American Badass, were all major parts of that era. Every main event from 14 to the end of 1998 was some combination of Austin, Foley, Taker, and Kane. Remove two of those guys and that changes quite a bit.

Jumping back a few years, 1998 was austins peak before the rock bumped him from the spotlight. Austin was so huge he was alone on the cover and they even printed "featuring stone cold steve austin" on the cover to really drive the point home.

You can look at ppv posters and vhs covers but often those highlight a main event feud specifically.

It’s well documented that The Kliq tried hard to bury The Rock when he was coming up. In particular HBK and HHH tried to bully and politic him into irrelevancy. Bret Hart among others has talked about this on camera and how he tried to look out for Rock back then. Basically Rock did a drop kick from the top turnbuckle and HBK who was a top guy at the time compared to newcomer Rock came into the locker room in a rage screaming at Rock to not ever to a top turnbuckle drop kick again and that it was HIS move. Bret proceeds to say “Lol that’s bullshit don’t let him cut a promo on you kid. Do the drop kick. Owen does it all the time and Shawn never cuts a promo on him. Nobody owns that move.”

What’s complicated about it is that it video game covers are dictated by someone’s decision at the WWE. It’s not as reliable of a stat as how many people bought merch or PPV’s or tuned into a show. It’s the company perception of who they think should make the cover whether that be accurate or not.

When WWE hosts a press conference and non-wresling news sources cover it. Who is showcased at that event? When attitude era wrestlers were sent to present an award at the acedemy awards, who did they send? Brand ambassadors. Mostly rock and stonecold, and then maybe the top heel in the copany as distant 3rd. Rock goes on Letterman, triple H goes on conan obrian (at the time the B tier late night option). Taker is a legend and had some great attitude era interviews out of character on lansberg (TSN) but wasnt useful as a brand ambassador.

Its a buisness. All decisions ever made are for the buisness. Its never who is the most talented or deserving, or who people in the year 2025 consider to be the GOAT (all eras). It was who the company chose to carry the brand. Sometimes it isnt even a "big 3" as the attitude era was more of a "big 2". No one else was near the level of rock or stonecold.

The most sensible thing in your whole spiel. I agree with you. I do think the only character in the company during that time that came close to the level of importance was Vince as the Mr. McMahon character. The WWF in the Attitude Era or at least the height of it revolved around those 3 largely. If you simply couldn’t take one of those guys out of the equation and slot someone else in for the same result. Irreplaceable.
