I've been watching random RAW and PPVs from the pre-attitude era (roughly 1994-1996). I've never really seen anything from this era before, and thought I'd share some observations from someone who is completely new to this.
- The crowds were not necessarily "hotter" then in terms of noise they made, but they were more animated and seemed more invested in the action.
- The "In Your House" living room set that they put at the top of the ramp looks like the set from America's Funniest Home Videos.
- King and JR are on fire on commentary. Best duo of all time, and I think King was better here than during the attitude era when he'd scream about puppies all the time.
- Speaking of King, also a fantastic heel wrestler.
- Vince is pretty shitty on commentary.
- Owen and Bret are two of the all-time greats in the ring.
- In general you can tell that the wrestling is far less choreographed than today and being called in the ring and as a result it feels more real.
- Vader and Diesel/Kevin Nash are horrible wrestlers, sloppy and boring, no idea how these fucks were ever hired apart from Vince's big man fetish.
- Shawn Michaels is a great wrestler, but not sure why he was dressing like a motorcycle ramrod from a gay bar.
- HHH actually played the smarmy heel role well, and I like him better here than when he nepotized himself into the business and got high on his own shit.
- Goldust was a better gimmick when he still had the androgenous aspect.
- I can't believe they charged $1.49 a minute in mid 90s money to call a hotline and "talk" to wrestlers. What a moneygrab.
