it was pointless to me as soon as they put it on seth. i was willing to see it as important if Gunther hadn't dropped the intercontinental title before winning it. but they had him drop it to sami clean for no apparent reason other than "you have to drop your belt before you can win the bigger one." makes no sense.

That was an actual world title though and absolutely meant something over time. This shit started as a consolation prize to Seth because Roman wasn't losing the belt anytime soon and has only persisted to stand a glorified midcard belt. No one who's won it has felt like a world champion

Adding I'm well aware that WWE's WHC began by Bischoff handing Triple H the title. It created more for brand split purposes though than just because one guy beat everyone else so many times that they needed something else to fight over

It was supposed to be the workhorse belt, which already doesn't make sense because that's what the IC is for, but then they gave it to a complete shitter like Damian Priest and killed any credibility it might've had. I mean really, does that guy seem like world champion material?

That was their kayfabe reasoning because they couldn't outright say oh hey Raw's had no belt for months because Roman only works Fridays the three times a year he shows up. So yeah they needed something. But yeah it's been a joke. Priest for sure solidified it as a midcard belt. Not unlike Balor with the Universal title. Drew was someone who actually could have elevated it but instead they pulled the shit they did there.
Truthfully if they wanted to it to feel like a world title the finals of that initial tournament thing should have been between Seth and Edge. Have Edge win it and kill two birds with one stone. You throw him a bone and you have a Hall of Famer with a whole career of world titles as your inaugural champion which instantly gives it the credibility it not only needed but has yet to gain. Then you can have Seth win it off of him after a few months and go on with him as champion all you like. The whole thing has sucked though

The kayfabe reasoning was the same as the IRL one, as in, it was supposed to be the belt for the guy that shows up and has good matches every PLE and on weekly TV while the WWE title was the big one that was defended occasionally with more important storylines. Seth's reign was mid and Damian killed any credibility it might've had because he is not a guy that can elevate a belt, especially a new one

WHC was more prestigious whenever it was the Raw belt because that was the A show. Didn't become the clear B belt until 2010 or so when the Midcard In The Bank shitters starting cashing in on it.

the only belt that matters in WWE is the WWE championship, both WHCs have been for a mix of main eventers (when they aren't fighting for the main title) and midcarders that are too good for IC/US but not good enough for the WWE title, there's a reason the vast majority of Cena's reigns have been with the WWE title and not the WHC
