Where did the "glorified house show" meme start? Saturday Night's Main Event was initially presented as a special event show featuring top stars (either in matches or segments) and star vs star matches, with good production values, shown for free on television. That was because wrestling TV used to be mostly hype for PPV with lots of squash matches and rarely the top few guys would appear. That changed with the Monday Night War. By the late 90s, a weekly episode of Raw or Nitro was pretty much the same concept as SNME. But after the end of the war, wrestling on TV regressed a lot especially in recent years. There's a lot of fluff and lots of skippable content, rather than must see with each segment trying to keep viewers. This is due to lack of competition (sorry AEW fans but it's true). So it makes sense for SNME to return.

It seems that way. I read comments in the Raw thread last night that this was the best wrestling they've ever seen on TV. Blew my mind that anyone could think that. And there were other posters agreeing with the statement too.

There were some great matches put on free TV in the early 2000s, but generally speaking I agree with you. I really enjoyed Lucha Underground from 10 years ago, for example, but I'd never call it "best wrestling" compared to what we used to get in the 90s or even the late 80s.

Wracking my brain back to the early 00s, you have some good ppv events like WM 17, 20, the following Backlash. But when compared to something like Warrior v Hogan or Roddy Piper painted half black it just doesn't hold up.

The superstar, larger-than-life, once in a lifetime feeling of the big wrestling events is long gone, I agree with you there. I think the last match of that type that we had was Hogan v Rock. Cena and Roman have never been at that level. The only one that truly felt like a big deal was Brock Lesnar, and Vince fucked that up by letting him go, and by the time he came back he had no one near his level to work with, and still ended up having to job to shitters like Roman
