Underground Rock music you could say that became progressively faster, noisier and simpler. It was co-opted pretty early on by some tastemakers and fashionistas. But even after that there were plenty of real ones. The whole first wave of Hardcore bands referred to themselves as Punk. Bad Brains, Black Flag, Cro-Mags. I can’t think of a less manufactured movement. A pure organic happening of young people that anyone born post-internet couldn’t even process. Hip-Hop is similar in that both genres occupied a specific niche and role in their culture and were basically free from the constraints of pleasing labels, even pleasing fans really. Either you liked it or you didn’t and no one seriously thought they would ever make any kind of money. What became of those genres you could say was manufactured but labels will create plants for anything they think has a chance at drawing a dime and they used to care about getting everyone’s cash. You couldn’t opt out, they would find something to sell you.
CM Punk isn’t even into Punk and never really was. At most he was a mall punk during that big explosion in the mid-late 90’s starting with Green Day and Offspring and peaking with Blink-182. Straight Edge culture was Hardcore/Punk culture exclusively and Phil was into that because he hated his daddy and brother. The Pepsi tattoo is a rig on the Coca-Cola one the guy from Minor Threat has.
