It is believed by many that in fact Daniel murdered his mother after most likely threatening her with that knife or something of that nature. He had done similar in the past and was uncontrollable.
Chris came home and found Nancy dead. Immediately he knew Daniel had done it. Daniel then slid around the corner, silently and snakelike, and corned Chris with his own pistol (which was later wiped down and replaced), he then led him into the weight room at gunpoint, and forced him to wrap the bowflex cords around his neck

In an amateur move the medical examiner didn't take Daniel's size and the temperature of his room into account when judging the times of death and had the order mixed up but everything points to this being the sequence of events.
