Fans loved them. Yeah, back then Tony listened to the fans, this was one of the reasons why we enjoyed AEW instead of a certain other fed that decides we must love Roman and push him down on throat for years.

Yeah, MJF's face turn made him so goofy, it's hard to take him seriously as a heel after that. They killed The Devil.
Fans loved Jungle Boy but nobody cares about Jack Perry, as good as his matches can be, so the heel turn killed him too.
Sammy can put great matches, and quite good as a heel or as a face, but every time he is about to be pushed he disappears for months.
Darby is the most valuable wrestler to AEW, Tony must have paid an A Team to keep an eye on him on Mt Everest and intervene as soon as something happens.

Man, can't believe people used to get excited for Jungle Bitch and Sammy, myself included. They are both so dead in the water that absolutely nobody misses them. MJF was the one with the highest ceiling but has completely overstayed his welcome now that his shtick got trite and tired. Darby has the most upside now because he's a mini-Jeff Hardy that can put on fun matches at least, but physically he will never ever look impressive and should not be the face of the company. It's not all on them, Tony's shit booking certainly doesn't help but the good ones can still shine despite that.

I think there's an argument for MJF, Jack and Darby to be seen as franchise players - they're important parts of AEW and AEW feels a bit worse when they're not there (literally feeling Jack and Darby missing just now) but Sammy? Dudes had multiple chances to run with the ball and has failed them all.

Typing this out about Sammy though it really just dawned on me how he has literally done nothing for himself or by himself. Did a quick search, what the fuck has he done for 5 years? He's always been the eh guy in every stable and his only asset is flippy guy in the flippy guy company.

Sammy with a moveset more like Chad Gable (suplexes, throws, submissions) would be dimes. Having a Komander moveset with less athleticism doesn't work for him.

It's a shame seeing how booking can totally ruin wrestlers. Whether you like them or not they were big homegrown favorites that were instrumental into propelling AEW into being a competitor against WWE. Tony's booking is catastrophic:

Should've been an ace in TKs sleeve and get a few years more experience before entering the main event scene. He crashed and burned from dinner debonaire and onwards

He was booked as a legit heel and could generate heat as an Inner Circle member. His feuds with Darby and Matt Hardy actually riled up the crowd. His downfall started with 3 things: 1. Cancelled for some nothingburger he said many years ago about Sasha Banks 2. Too much comedy because of Jericho 3. Linked up with Tay Cunti

The weakest of the four pillars but got booked strong early when he had a main event vs world champ jericho that went to a timeout draw. He just needed to find a niche and a gimmick to run with solo. Unfortunately his downfall started from day 1 when they stuck Marko Stunt with the Jurassic Express and Botchasaurus didn't do Jungle Boy any favors either

The worst booked one imo. He was very very over. As much as I like Sting and while Darby and Sting had many memorable feuds against others, being stuck for over 2 years in tag matches with Sting took away his individuality. They should've split or made Sting more of a manager.

Sorry for the long ass post but apart from the aforementioned shittily booked four pillars, AEW had a huge amount of potential stars in their roster, homegrown and bought alike, that TK totally and utterly fumbled the ball with:

>Miro
>Scorpio Sky
>Penta
>Ricky Starks
>Takeshita
>Will Hobbs
>Hook
>Pac
>Malakai (though I don't like him, he was booked strong as a main heel im the codyverse)

The above examples as well as the four pillars, if booked right, would've been good enough to hold up the company and at the same time keep an unique AEW "feel" instead of what it is today: a diluted WWE lite with old guys. There were also plenty of guys from different promotions like Lucha Underground, TNA, from Europe and of course WWE that gave AEW that unique blend. Again theu fumbled that with shitty booking and too much comedy.

Sammy never had the ability to take himself seriously and always came across like a half-assed half-joking Young Bucks style, which meant people could never really resonate with his character post-Inner Circle, that combined with his stop start booking and his continued failed attempts to get over as a babyface all fucked him. I still believe in him. It's not for nothing that he was carrying Dynamite in late 2019.
