According to the movie by being over bearing and not letting them pursue their own interests.
According to ever shoot interview prior the movie he ignored all their bad habits, drinking and drugs in particular, and they just spiraled out cause they were huge local celebrities and rich for wrestlers in their teens and early 20s.
