the japs just do theatrics so much better because they are at least partially genuine marks for it. ufc never cared for any of that, they wanted their presentation to blend in with established combat sports like boxing because they had a huge hurdle to get over in terms of looking like a legitimate sport and getting approval from sports commissions. who knows how much of pride was actually a work but those cards felt like real major fucking sporting events.

fighters will talk all about how they got fucked over having to fight different fighters last minute (usually Japs the office wanted to promote), being demanded that they fight on like 2 weeks notice, and they did drug tests (illegal not PEDs) they'd only pop you for if they didn't like you, but they don't talk about being told to have fixed fights, except for Mark Coleman in one fight against that Pancrase guy :) Look it up

Also even though it was run by the yakuza, being Japanese didn't automatically mean they were going to put you over the gaijins. They modeled the way they promoted and did business after pro wrestling in every way. They kept their top freakshow draws in safe positions for the majority of the time as well regardless of nationality

Dave started arguing that MMA was pro-wrestling. That they were the same thing, so he had to cover both. This was his way of moving away from wrestling into something more respectable and mainstream. But he wasn't taken seriously as an MMA journalist, got publicly mocked by Dana White and then came back to pretty much just covering wrestling again. He suddenly decided wrestling was better than ever and started handing out 5 stars every week. A sad tale, really.
