New Japan are deliberately trying to re-create the dark ages of the mid 2000s. By pushing the older guys and having boring Goto (and likely EVIL) main events, they're going to intentionally stagnant the promotion. The idea is that when a new wrestler comes along, everyone’s going to get behind them because they’ll be the ones to break the boring status quo, just like Nakamura and Tanahashi did during the dark ages.
