Surely things like slavery and segregation are already part of regular social studies or history classes

Yes that stuff is all taught as regular American history. "Black history" is rewriting the past to say historical figures were actually black and that famous inventions or accomplishments had a secret black person in the background who actually made it happen.

It's mostly teaching more about black figures. I don't know what it's like now but I remember in school we learned the bare minimum about figures like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and MLK. Then things like the Tulsa Race Massacre were completely ignored.
