Legal definitions can often be very broad. For example: take a couple that's in an argument, one person decides to leave, and the other steps in front of them, preventing them from leaving, in order to try and finish out the argument--that is legally a kidnapping. It's something that's incredibly common, and also a felony in most jurisdictions.
