A defensive pact is not provocation unless you plan to attack. Their invasion has simply shown why NATO was needed, because Russia will attack its neighbours if it has a chance. That is why, since the war, NATO has expanded and why military funding is increasing across the continent and why Europe, that was previously building economic ties with Russia now has many, many sanctions instead.
Putin did, indeed attack "now" because of NATO, because otherwise it simply would have waited until later. The attack was always coming, because that's all Russia knows, apparently.
