He did it as a sign of solidarity with AEW against WWE. It wasn't just a night out with his family watching wrestling, the kids don't give a fuck about it, they're his shield. He wanted to support AEW live when he knew nobody would be watching on TV because of the much bigger show happening at the same time setting the stage for WrestleMania.

Dave made a conscious decision to choose the smallest AEW show over a major WWE event.

I think the more plauseable reason is hes always raving about CMLL and wanting to see some of their guys at a show that is close to him. And honestly before this big Cena heel turn the show didn't look THAT good on paper, certainly nothing out of this world that couldn't be watched later on

Ofc the PLE looked like shit, they all do & usually are but it's Meltzer, the guy covers this stuff for more than just a living, it's his life. He knew something big would happen on the show to set up Mania, he just didn't know what because no one tells him anything anymore. So yeah he coped with the luchadors and was probably looking at his phone during their match catching up on what was happening in WWE. He probably watched the Cena turn in out of order clips on Twitter scrambling to figure out what was going on. It's just sad.
