>>17168317Kilborn was pretty good. His version of the Daily Show was a lot more lighthearted, especially when compared to Jon Stewart's moral crusades against targets like the mass media (in particular Fox News). Stewart took himself seriously despite hiding behind the facade of a comedian. Kilborn was a real comedian.
That's what eventually caused him to leave. Head writer Lizz Winstead wanted to take the show in a more serious direction as the audience grew thanks in large part to South Park's popularity, like they had a responsibility to be more serious now that they had this big platform. Kilborn was against it and just wanted to keep being funny. Their feud eventually led to Kilborn making "sexist" jokes at Winstead, which then led to his departure as well as Winstead's departure, but eventually she got her way with Stewart.
Kilborn was better at interviews. Interviews were always the weakest part of the Daily Show under Stewart. I'd always change the channel during them. Kilborn knew how to have fun with a guest without going overboard like Fallon. He was no Craig Ferguson, but that's a high bar. He was good.
I'd also say the show's contents were just better under Kilborn because again it was just about goofing around and being funny. Definitely better segments because they weren't afraid to just flat out make shit up because they weren't the real news. It was a comedy show. When they did interview crazy people, they just let the crazy people speak for themselves and be funny. Under Stewart, they never let the crazy people just have at it and say what they wanted. They were always trying to shove words in their mouths and speak over top of them.
Even the Moment of Zen bit got weaker under Stewart because instead of using clips from whatever the fuck, they used clips recycled from the show. Yeah, real funny guys, saw that shit ten minutes ago. Way to repeat the joke.
