While the initial concussion was bad, do you think Bret would have made an in-ring return around 2003-2004 if he didn't have the bike accident that gave him another concussion and a stroke? Bryan Danielson came back after roughly 3 years.

Imagine if Bret would have returned to the WWE around that time.

Guys like him and Mr Perfect would have never fared in a post-AE WWE. The singlet and "i'm the best wrestler" gimmick were so passé around 2002-2003. Only Angle managed to pull it off and he had humor like no other to help the character get over (also an Olympic medal but that was just a prop more than anything).

Hmmm, I can get that. I still feel Bret worked as "the straight man" in the cartoony world of wrestling. Perhaps trying to reinvent himself at TNA would have fared better for Bret if he could still wrestle.

I agree that it all depends on Bret and his willingness to reinvent himself. I will always pop for "bitter old man" bully Bret and I honestly think it would have been a perfect gimmick in that era, close enough to who he is IRL. Like just verbally annahiliate the young lions and put them over, but not in the main event scene. Just my opinion.

Bret's quite misunderstood as a promo guy and I find his heel work to be some of his best work. Either at TNA or WWE, having him be the litmus test to see if someone can make it in the main event scene. Imagine a feud between Bret and a young AJ Styles at TNA.

personally, i just cant see a world where healthy bret in wwf doesnt keep getting better at promos and character work, to be honest. i do agree 'best there is, best there was' as the totality of the gimmick would probably need to be dropped, ideally in a way that puts over someone who is objectively better like angle so they could kind of feud over it and semi-retire bret.

This is what made Bret so great. Bret cashed in on his Lloyd's policy when he got the concussion news. He couldn't mount a comeback for years without risking fraud charges. Hennig did the same thing when he felt he'd wrestled enough.
Bret had to know that WCW wasn't going to last much longer and he'd burned his better bridges with Vince after Montreal, especially after heeming him in the locker room. So it was time to retire, go wank to minor league hockey, and write columns for the local newspaper.
