He's a heel, you're supposed to hate him.
He's a heel, his beliefs are supposed to be wrong and bad.
People wanted new merch and a new intro out of him. He denied them that, which is a heel move.
It's shaping up that Cena is a traditional heel and will be giving a master's class on how to be a heel.

Yeah I didn't like the gap either, but my guess at the time is that they had a specific storyline planned out which amounted to X episodes worth of promos and they decided to not dilute their planned story just to fit the schedule. One of my longest running pet peeves about storylines in wrestling since fucking forever was always that storylines seemed to stretch a week or two longer than they should have simply because the schedule necessitates it, so when in recent years they started prioritizing the pacing of their story over always having it featured every week on TV I saw it as a positive development. Sure some people might lose interest due to those gaps but I guess they're not super worried about it.

But then Cena cuts his promo after that two week gap and shows me absolutely nothing to justify the pause in the story. I swear I was genuinely thinking this whole time "man for them to dare take a gap like this on their build to mania must mean that they're SUPER confident on how they've planned this storyline" but right now I confess I just don't see the vision.

Because it's mainly schizo booking...Honestly imo the best play would have been for Rock and Cena to say that they're feuding against the whole model of "having a top guy" because it stole their joy and telling Cody that one day he'd be just like them, and pointing out that this also happened to Hogan, Austin, and Reigns....That would be more interesting than Cena breaking up with the fans, which every single heel does.

But I get that this may well go over the heads of 90% of the viewing audience
