>>17315514Well, toy collectors have this thing for sealed box / mint condition collecting because when a item is desirable or predicted to be desirable and increased in demand in the future you can ask for massive profit on your 15 dollar hunk of plastic. So it's basically investing and trying to get status.
An opened Optimus Prime transformers toy from the 80's goes for a good 8-12k where as in you can get the same toy as a chinese repro for about 200 and I'd consider even that scalping, for something that meaningless to be priced in the 10k range without actual material value it needs to have high demand, scarcity of availability which being an original production of something.
It's pretty much the same mentality in sneakers. You know that vietnamese dude who made the shoe got 80 cents for it and Nike sold it 40 dollarinos and could easily remake the same worthless shoe but because it has limited quantities people treat that plastic shoe like it's gold and diamonds.
So you'll see people literally buying one for handling and one for storage, some people literally display the packaged unopened boxes.
