Because the smell is all the chemicals in your pores from years of deodorant and antiperspirant use. If you go cold turkey and just use a pure soap and thoroughly scrub your armpits out every time you take a shower, you will eventually not smell bad. Admittedly there is a transition period. It takes maybe a few weeks. Also certain foods like garlic make you smell bad too.
