The two men Gaytch was keeping the belt warm for were Steve Austin and The Rock. Gaytch was never, EVER, the preferred top choice. After Rock and Austin were gone, Vince wanted to push Brock Lesnar to the moon but he ended up leaving for the NFL within a few years. Cena was next man up. Gaytch was never in serious contention. He was just put in place while other guys were being built up, also because he's fucking the boss' daughter who was also head of creative.

I never thought Triple H was an all time great. Austin, Rock, Angle, Taker, Christian, Kane, they all had identifiable gimmicks and good matches. All Triple H had was spitting water and a sledgehammer for some reason. He will always be cringe.

Yeah, that's why Triple H consistently beat Rock in the midcard. Then when he moved up to the main event, he continued beating Rock consistently, culminating in Rock only being able to take the title off of him via screwy 6-man tag shennanigans involving pinning Vince. Then Austin came back and Triple H won their rivalry. Then he had to help Austin beat Rock. Then he had to help Austin beat Matt Hardy. Then he had to help Austin beat Taker. Then he came back and beat Austin in the Rumble and main-evented Mania while Austin mid-carded against a drunk. Then he went on to be champion and focal point of WWE's flagship show. Something that sent Austin seething back to Texas for a year. When he finally came back, Hunter buried his kiddie badge. Yep. He was definitely always positioned as the guy that WWE didn't want.
