In a low-ohm circuit, a 12v battery can pump a ton of power into a device (car starter). Your body's natural electrical resistance saves you from death. That being said, there is a lot of risk to what they did. Under normal circumstances, they are fine. Add some form of metal to the equation or if the dude was really sweaty and it could have killed him.
