Schiavone was widely considered to be one of the worst commentators of all time back in the day. It wasn't until 20 years of nostalgia plus him signing with AEW that people started pretending he's good. Even when he was in MLW, people were complaining about him being back in wrestling.

Schiavonne was the WCW version of Michael Cole. No actual talent, not likable, but just shoved in the same spot for so long that people get Stockholm syndrome and pretend he was actually good at it.
Just like Cole he has no memorable or great lines. (greatest night in the history of our sport is basically his OH MY) and actually made some of the greatest moments worse with his awful calls. "I never thought I'd say he was yellow, well he may be wearing red, but he's wearing red... AND YELLOW" is without question one of the worst calls in history.
The fact Heenan despised him, completely checked out past 97 and still was 10x the commentator Schiavonne was is just sad.

also worth mentioning, like Cole, he was the mouthpiece for the voice screaming into the headphones, only instead of Vince, it was Bischoff that was directing Tony to ramble on about the nWo/Sting/whatever other main event bullshit, all the while, Tenay was trying to call a lucha or cruiserweight match

He was pretty good as the young motivated guy for taped 1980s studio wrestling and then OK in the early 1990s. Let's see, he was top 3 in the Observer awards from 1986 to 1993, sometimes 2nd behind Jim Ross. Then in 1994 he suddenly drops to 8th best and becomes 4th worst. This was the first year with Joey Styles debuting at 1st, which highlights how Schiavone was coming across behind the times and not knowing the names of new moves and such. From here it goes downhill for Tony with him eventually 2nd worst in 1998 and 1st worst in 1999 and 2000, and 2nd worst after Cole for 2001. Tony often seemed overwhelmed by the live Nitros and all that was going on, whereas with the taped Saturday night shows he was more locked into an old school formula.

That's the thing. Guys like Schiavone, Cole, etc all got shit on for years by guys like Meltzer and other dirt sheets for ignoring the action happening in the ring, talking about other storylines or matches happening later in the show, meanwhile completely ignoring the fact they're just doing their job as they're told. They didn't call moves because the guy in charge (be it Vince McMahon, Eric Bischoff, whoever) told them not to. Michael Cole got noticeably better as soon as Vince left WWE because he wasn't being shouted at through an IFB earpiece and being given lines to parrot back constantly. Everyone talked about how great Joey Styles was on commentary, but the reality was Heyman wasn't micromanaging every single word that came out of his mouth.

AEW fans will clap like seals and defend anything that Tony puts in front of them to the death. The only real exception is Jim Ross because they'll throw an absolute fit if he makes any sort of mistake, but JR should honestly retire at his age anyway.

JR has been a bumbling mess on commentary for 20 straight years now. He's obviously well past his sell by day in the current year, but the same is true when you go back to the mid-2000s when he illustrated week after week that he didn't even know what a moonsault was.

The worst thing about Tony was his blatent indifference to everything. Heenan or Tenay were always the ones who actually had to sell the match and story. Heenan would take time before every big match talking about the wrestlers mindset, their preparation, their strategy, and Tony would just say something to the effect of "Yeah, get that scumbag Hogan." in the least enthused bored manner possible.
It's no wonder Heenan gave up and stopped caring because he had to not only do his own job, but Schiavonne's too.

Zoomers don't know shit, he was retroactively hated on because Bobby Heenan shot on him in his book and the AEW boogeyman doesn't work either, people started looking back more fondly on him when he reemerged for the podcast and MLW before AEW even existed.

How come JR and King didn't have that issue then?, I mean you aren't wrong at all, but if it was like that how it did affect Cole so much while barely having any effect on JR and King?. Sure Vince was an on-screen character but JR and King were amazing at commentary even while Vince wasn't playing himself.

Vince wasn't in the headset when JR and King when on commentary. Prichard was. What made JR quit was when they moved him to smackdown and Vince started screaming in his ear and demanded he come in after tapings and redo commentary

people are just nostalgic for him and are used to terrible commentary at this point. He's better than most indy announcers I guess, and sometimes being next to a half dead JR who doesn't care at all helps him seem better. People like Lawler who was mostly shit are also remembered fondly so yeah.
