i knew player came from japan but i wasn't sure originally if it came from the theatrical use of player or the video game use - but upon finding out about games later, of course it was the video game use of the term

No it comes from literal interpretation of sporting competition. You play in the game. Nothing to do with video games. Stone Cold Steve is a player in the game of pro wrestling, in the same way Michael Jordan was a player in the game of basketball and Brett Hull was a player in the game of hockey, etc.
