I think he said on some interview it was partially his pitch with Griffin to have "all around appeal" or something to that extend, but yeah it's kinda sad nobody on top figured out it wasn't exactly the best fit for two long haired dudes.
Kinda like nobody told Trustbusters their gimmick was ass and said no to putting them on tv.

Pillman and Griff looked good together but the gimmick was lame. What hurt him most though is that MJF feud because he just didn't have the mic skills. Tony also didn't learn from this and has put other people with MJF who ended up having the same problem.

Tony didn't fumble Pillman because he's a shitter at the end of the day, but he fumbled the MJF feud big time. They could have stretched that out for a couple of months and even though you wouldn't have him go over, you could have seen whether or not he had any actual fire in him to do a serious feud. I think he was buried because he was a dumbass though and rubbed people the wrong way. Didn't Punk have a pop at him for some cancel culture tee he was wearing or something?

As for Page, MJF does everything he does and does it better so he was never going far in AEW. I think he'll make a decent career for himself in WWE, but will likely follow a Heath Slater path and get released eventually rather than replacing Miz.

First category are basically older guys, or journeyman to help others in wwe. Moxley is a case of “I did what I wanted so I’ll just chill.”
Second category are guys who were in the company or don’t really need help with the main roster, maybe they have a gimmick, maybe people are very familiar with them or are good in the ring and don’t need nxt to help.
Third category is for touch ups. Introducing some new guys to the audience. Maybe some help with ring rust, maybe to help them talk or have a gimmick so they can get to the main roster easily or just have a bit more eyes on them.
