Back in something around 1990's the Global and European trade manipulation caused a great financial depression in Finland. Thousands of jobs vanished overnight. All though the neighboring countries like Sweden and Norway are rich they do surprisingly little in the grand scheme of things to exports and trade and are themselves better positioned to trading with central Europe. Finland still had it's own central bank and currency, but it is obvious that this is the point where EU and EU controlled currency was being discussed. Long story short, instead of independence and self-determination by slow growth Finland joined the EU, followed by a quick move to replace the fin mark currency with Euros - which was done by vote in parliament instead of a national vote though it was specifically stated to be a national vote issue.
In the early 1990's you'd have to work to find a single black man in the entire country but on the eve of the EU transition, the war of Somalia suddenly became a huge boom in the media and the first refugees started to get flown in.
