I'm not fantasy booking, but giving an example of an AEW PPV I would consider watching after giving up on the promotion years ago. The real card looks like an excruciatingly long episode of Dynamite. The Trios division should be eliminated. It's an excuse to get contracted talent on the shows but it's hard for fans to pretend to care about it. Quarterfinal matches that make up part of a tournament for nothing are not a PPV draw. Most of the proven talent on this show are being misused. Ospreay and Lashley were both made out to be major acquisitions to the roster but now they're both in matches that cast them in minor roles. Much of the airtime of this show will strain the capacity of the audience to remain attentive to unproven talent, and many of the performers on this card are straight up untalented and ought to be released from their contracts (Daniel Garcia's release from AEW will be the first sign that they might be figuring things out).

The Ospreay match is fucking terrible booking and probably just Ospreay calling in a favor for his mate. I do think it's bizarre that they never built on his initial hype by pushing him as world champion and just let him sit with the international belt for a bit before moving on. The Lashley match is part of an angle involving MJF and The Hurt Syndicate in a plor to make MJF relevant again. Granted, I agree it should maybe have been a Dynamite headliner instead of PPV material, but I get that it's a long-term storytelling type thing.

As I made a point of mentioning, I haven't watched AEW so I wouldn't know if Ricochet was playing a heel or have a sense of what his character would "need" right now. I paired them off on grounds that they're both capable of executing the sort of exciting undercard match that might draw the interest of someone who knew fuck all about how Tony is booking them.

We're in agreement on Ospreay. He was seemingly being booked as "the best wrestler in the world" with wins over Omega and Danielson (the two guys on the roster whose major matches I'll always watch). Then, from what I recall, Ospreay was booked to lose to Swerve in what could have been presented as a minor setback in his career. Without having any knowledge of the incredibly boring "long-term storytelling" behind their histories, I then saw that Ospreay was booked to lose clean to Fletcher. This completely ruined Ospreay. The two subsequent wins over Fletcher have done nothing to restore his status to where it was following the Danielson victory, and Fletcher is just another guy on the roster. Now they're both in matches I wouldn't pay to see.

I don't know anything about the long-term storyline that connects Lashley to MJF. I would bet anything that it's dogshit that makes no sense and never will. Lashley isn't known for pulling off the sort of matches that might close out Wrestle Kingdom or anything, but, like Mox and Cope, he has the sort of recognition that Tony squanders when he doesn't feature him in a singles role near the top of the card. Just as he did with Ospreay/Fletcher, Tony's plot to use Lashley as means "to make MJF relevant again" is sure to diminish both of them. ....And why the fuck would MJF need anything other than simply having the camera pointed at him to get over? You don't have to answer that, but it's all the more reason for me to believe that I'm not missing anything by not watching AEW.
