WM 2000 was probably the worst. There wasn't one singles match on the entire card. A hardcore battle royal, two triple threats and a fatal-four way the rest were shitty tag team matches.

Assuming it hasn't changed, it is written into WWE contracts that performers receive a bonus for being featured on Mania (and every PPV, but apparently the Mania bonus was especially generous). Stone Cold has mentioned this on his podcast and I'm pretty Maven corroborates it in one of his videos. I'm sure I've heard it elsewhere too. This bonus forced Vince (and so now Paul) to take care to find a spot on the Mania card for anyone who might resent being denied a Mania bonus. I'm sure this is related to why the wave of wrestlers being released has historically followed Mania weekend. They surely modified how the performers are paid out now that they follow the streaming service format with PLEs instead of old-school PPV, but I doubt they would have eliminated these popular bonuses.

Pretty stupid to have that be a thing anymore. Especially if you're going to just throw people on the card for the sake of the bonus when they aren't a draw and won't sell a single ticket or PLE purchase from being on the card. This made sense back in the day when people actually had to earn their spots through making money. It's not like that anymore.

Agreed. I'm sure many of the executives thought the same thing then and still do now. The thing is that it is apparently an incredibly powerful boost in locker room morale in a line of work that is notoriously taxing (esp. with all the travel). Low end talent who made something like $200k a year could be thrown into a Mania filler match and wake up a couple days later with an additional $60k deposited in their bank overnight. The bonuses could be significantly higher based on a number of factors. Once something like this becomes an annual tradition, it's almost impossible to inform the talent that they're eliminating the bonuses without causing an uproar. I now vaguely recall Jericho recounting a story about locker room drama centered around someone being left off the card and thus denied a Mania bonus (can't recall if Jericho was hosting his own podcast or a guest on another), but the sense you get when people talk about them is these bonuses are a huge deal to the talent. I know I'm hazy on the details here, but anyone interested should be able to find clarity on the subject.

I don't get the complaints because it was always way worse. It just seems like the big Roman Triple threat created dumb talking points.

They had obligatory MITB matches at Mania for like 6 years, then a few IC ladder matches, Tag team showcases, etc

Kairi was on basically every nxt ppv after she signed and IYO was on basically every nxt ppv until coff. she would have random ass nontitle singles matches with bitches like candice on nxt ppvs. Kairi and IYO both took paycuts to join NXT and were promised either in contract or informally a certain number of PPV appearances to make up the difference in bonuses

You're acting like WWE didn't also used to have Men and Women's Battle Royals just to make sure as many people got on the show as possible. Luckily the Women's Battle Royal died with COVID, and the Andre Memorial Battle Royal got moved to the Smackdown before WrestleMania.

neither of them were on the TV show until after the mae young tournaments. From when IYO shows up at takeover brooklyn she is pretty much immediately added to the title scene and in nearly every ppv.

Kairi was taken out by Shayna and missed like 3-4 Takeovers. Iyo also signed in Summer 2018 and didn't get on a Takeover until Mania 2019. And Sareee never made a PPV.

2 out of 5 Joshi got on PPV/Takeovers right after debuting. Your point made no sense

She was not. Her first Takeover was Mania week in 2019. She was on NXT in October 2018 and only there to help Kairi until then. Thats like 5-6 months.

was the next fucking takeover/ppv
there was brooklyn 4 where she showed up. wargames where she was there to help but not in the match, phoenix for the rumble where she had a tag match and then the mania one which was new york was the 4th ppv after she debuted and she was physically there for all 4 ppvs
