This sounds more likely. There aren't marauding groups of servicemen looking to jump people. I served overseas and got into fights in bars while serving and you wouldn't believe the snitch culture in the military. I'm willing to bet it was one guy and he got hemmed up when news broke that he was fighting out in town.
