Akira Maeda (66) is facing massive backlash from the pro-wrestling community after comments he made in a recent YouTube video about DDT wrestler Masa Takanashi’s (42) cervical spinal cord injury.
Maeda criticized today's wrestlers, calling them "imitation wrestlers" who lack real conditioning and skills and don't know how to take safe bumps.
His remarks sparked strong reactions from many in the industry, including Shingo Takagi (42) and Yuji Nagata (56).
Takagi stated in a longform tweet, "(...) Even with a seatbelt, driving isn't 100% safe, right? Stories from the past are helpful, but times have changed. Wrestlers step into the ring knowing the risks and with full awareness of what's at stake."
"[Maeda-san] says today's wrestlers can't take bumps, but if that were true, we'd be seeing way more injuries. Modern wrestlers study and understand bumping even more deeply than those from the past," Nagata said in his video response.
