They make up personas for TV and have to keep up that persona to keep the illusion of "pro" wrestling alive, so when they're addressed by shoot names, it feels personal because 1. They probably didn't tell anyone or not many knew, 2. It's their personal name, and it feels strange hearing it from a stranger when they've been playing a character the whole time. It's like online users using their online handles, being called out by their real name from someone they don't know, even if it was a fan, would be weird, right? So I can kinda get where Punk was coming from.
That said, he DID leave WWE, so it's a bit silly he got huffy about it, but I imagine since he was so used to playing the character his mind was still in that mindset somewhat. Besides, what're you gonna call him, Mr. Punk? Mr. CM? Sounds goofy. But don't overthink it, it's a small, trivial situation. I doubt Punk even remembers that at all.
