Edge was already main eventing, had already won MITB, and was going to be a world champion before any of what happened between him and Lita got out. People treat this shit like Triple H and Stephanie which they're also wrong on because Triple H was already WWF champion before those two even got together

Yes and no. That was definitely the case from his debut up through his 2002 push. From what he's told, after he broke his neck and missed those two Manias back to back the company all but lost faith in him. Especially after his return hype wore off and he was getting booed in Toronto as a face. Think that was Summerslam 2004. He was even willing to sit out Mania 21 because he wanted to be done with all of that ladder shit with how much time it took from him. Vince wasn't even fully sold on his idea on how to cash in the MITB contract and apparently when he's standing at the top of the stage with him and hands him the briefcase Vince is saying something like 'prove you're right' to him. He saved his ass by pitching that 2004 heel turn after the Toronto thing
