>>17677430Having a good writer (and an actual director) is more essential to the modern format of weekly pro wrestling tv than almost any other talent, because he could make anything work and actually manage to squeeze as much quality out of the roster as possible. I have a hard time following both of WWE and AEW's tv shows because of an overwhelming feeling of ''waste'' on this regard, and because of the abundant evidence of just how horribly uncreative both HHH and TK really are. Things shouldn't be taking steps backwards after Lucha Underground already set such an excellent standard of compelling wrestling TV. Shawn's NXT, at least up until the intial wave of callups happened when Bron and Ilja were leaving, might be the only show that managed to carry that mantle forward. And in respect to the taxing work that is wrestling the actual matches themselves, you could argue that the wrestlers deserve better. With the japanese companies, they find a sweet spot that can reward the wrestlers' physical sacrifices with a dignified approach to how to keep the storytelling moving forward, regardless of the occasional odd booking choices there's a decent structure that's built around the work, but then again they're not operating on a consistent weekly schedule.
I also legitimately think that there is room for an artsy wrestling show on the market, as long as its following a sincere and coherent vision. I would argue that mid 2000s psychotic Vince, with all the trashy acts like Snitsky and Kerwin White and Muhammad Hassan and miscarriage angles and Kurt & Sharmell and all that crazy shit, is just as worthy of a cultural artifact as Wonder Showzen.
To conclude on a not-so unpopular thought, post-knee injury Seth Rollins exemplifies every single aspect that is wrong with the biz and showcases how and why it feels so directionless.
