The Doink gimmick should have continued forever. It's absolute dimes, and could absolutely get over again today in like 6 minutes. If Tony Khan had a Doink he'd instantly add AT LEAST 100K per show to his ratings, with rapidly increasing returns based on Doink booking. He could be hitting 18 mil a week by 2026 with a Doink TBS title run.

Absolutely. I don't know if it's my childhood speaking, but Doink was the best spOooOOoky character ever.

The character has been gone long enough that people would pop loud as shit for it and he can feud with the mid card spooky acts like Malakai or Karen Kross

I think Doink has so much longevity because he can so effortlessly switch gimmicks from creepy clown, to supernatural nightmare, to just some weirdo heel, to even some fucked up Ronald McDonald babyface. There's like infinite directions you can take this one hyper specific gimmick in, without fundamentally changing it. Kind of like how Taker and Sting were always over had loads of gimmicks, but were always fundamentally the same character. As human beings we love to see people change and we love to see the ways in which they stay the same. The continuity of existence.

At that time, they honestly just had too many silly gimmicks. The day I saw Mantaur debut was the day I knew it had gone too far. But you know what? These days I think they don't have enough silly gimmicks. Everyone is trying to be le protagonist and so they think theyre too good to be the comedy act. Doink is a good example, actually. He was never taken all that seriously but people liked him and he helped to make the shows more fun. It wouldnt have been the same without him. His ECW run was pure classic kino.
