>>17749563People (and mark wrestlers, by extension) don't understand what makes pro-wrestling tick.
It's not about the wrestlers having fun.
That's what gets people into indy wrestling to begin with. The fun of goofing around, having crazy play fights like kids.
But it misses the point. The point of wrestling isn't for the wrestlers to entertain themselves. It's to entertain the fans, and sometimes, if the wrestlers are going to do a good job at it, it means doing stuff that's not very fun at all.
People who got into the business to have fun have trouble wrapping their heads around that and that's why, when push comes to shove, they tend to wind up being shitters. People who approach it as a rigged sport do better because they understand sports and, as an extension, understand what people who watch sports want to see and what they are entertained by.
Japan kept that mentality which is why continued to do well when Western wrestling started going to crap - they had Western indy shitters there but at least they insisted on making them work professionally. Take those same shitters and put them in the US working for a company that doesn't know how to keep them under thumb, however, and the flaws in their mindset just glare and pull the product down.
