Preston was always a Cody Rhodes guy in AEW. One of his pet projects. Was put under a mask and paired with Brody Lee, who himself was a Cody guy too.
The Dark Order goons never fucking liked Brody Lee. Grayson and Uno DESPISED Brody as the whole group was created for Marty Scrull, who fucked off and signed with Ring of Honor instead resulting in Cody suggesting Brody lead Dark Order instead. Which the Super Smash Brothers, who were basically the guys who Hangman Page got hired to carry his bags, despised. And the hate got worse when Brody died, permanently turning Dark Order into a Brody Lee tribute act.
When Page got stuck spending time with Dark Order while waiting for his coronation/beating Omega for the belt, he went out of his way to basically bury Preston every chance he could. Preston went from being the breakout star of the group to being it's jobber, because Hangman was jealous as fuck that people liked Ten more than Hangman. Especially Brody's wife and son, who Hangman despises but has to tolerate. Meanwhile Brody and his family were the only member of Dark Order who was friends with Preston and Brody was something of a mentor to Preston, while the rest of Dark Order treated him and Minus One like pariahs; which is why Minus One developed a hero worship complex towards Preston.
