See in Japan people really have a lot of loyalty to the company they work for, and often when someone is old, rather than firing a loyal employee, they'll just move the person's desk to a nice window view, and give them very simple, easy tasks to do so they're comfortable. It's basically retirement, the company no longer needs their services, but they've been there so long and so the company wants to take care of them. But right now when Japan's economy isn't very strong, they really need to get rid of some of these people, but they still don't want to just fire them. So now they're moving their desks into rooms with no windows, and having them do absolutely nothing, trying to make them so bored that they'll just quit.
