it's a work, he's using the name Alberto del Rio again, and in an interview he did after this stunt, he said positive things about the acquisition and hinted that he's open to go to the main roster again but it depends more on WWE

My guess is that he's losing the title to effectively go to the main roster for a while, possibly working as an AAA ambassador, after all he's a multi time champion and already known in WWE so he would be the perfect bridge between WWE and AAA
