It's long term emotional investment from having watched it for years.
They're not pretending. They actually enjoy it, even if they don't particularly enjoy anything it might be doing at a particular point in time. It's much like the mentality that goes into rooting for a sports team, where you do everything you can to convince yourself that your team is the one that really has heart and is the best even though it hasn't been to the World Series in years.
That's the best way I can explain it.

This, it’s like supporting a sports team, except even sports teams fans are allowed to voice their opinions and debate about how the team is performing. You can’t have that here, but I think that speaks more to the upbringing and social experiences of those individuals who don’t allow it or are in constant denial.

Also, it feels like some of them only started watching in the last decade and don’t know any better, but they are literal zoomers on Instagram.

That's exactly what it feels like.
It's like debating sports teams but you're not allowed to talk about performance, just how much money the teams are drawing. Those same people try to justify it saying it's a fake sport which means entertainment value doesn't matter. It's a dumb argument - all TV shows are fake but I've never heard anyone argue that the quality of, say, Yellowstone doesn't matter.

They're every bit as obnoxious as the AEW fanatics.
I watch both along with other stuff. I like AEW when it's good (and I feel it hasn't been until recently) and I like WWE when it's good (and I like it because it's not AEW) When they're not good, I watch less and am vocal about what I don't like so they can change.
As for me, I just want to be entertained. I don't care about how much money they are or aren't pulling in or how empty the seats are. A good show is a good show and a bad one is bad regardless of the gate.

Actually, I rarely comment on this.
But I get it. You have to pretend I'm your boogeyman so you can feel you somehow have a point when you know you don't.

No one is asking you to. Nor do I think you're pretending to like WWE.
I do find it curious, however, that you take criticism of WWE as an attack on the team (and thus on yourself since you obviously tie your identity into the team) and your only recourse is to assume the critic is therefore on the other team so you attack that instead of addressing the criticisms themselves.

I stopped watching/liking WWE after they decided to break Taker's streak at Mania. I'm not saying Lesnar wasn't the right guy to do it (I actually do like Bork a lot) but the decision as a whole really kind of felt like a dagger in the heart to at least a part of what made WWE special, at least, during that point in time. WWE had already started becoming "unlikeable" post-RA era and Taker's streak was one of the few things leftover that kept me coming back. Taker really should have retired for good after the "End of an Era" angle with HHH and HBK. But I get it, they wanted to "give the rub" to someone who deserved it. Personally, I'd have preferred Orton to be the one to have broken it (which as we all know he was supposed to be the one originally to do it), but that was still part of the RA era so I guess that doesn't really count because WWE was still somewhat enjoyable back then.

Nowadays I really only ever occasionally tune in for Alexa Bliss. Not even joking. She's the only thing I like about WWE in it's current state. Cena being a heel now is cool too I suppose but they pulled the trigger on that shit way too late.

It's like if a movie studio decided that their chief priority was not box office returns or tickets sold but Siskel and Ebert thumbs rating, and your movie will get approved or denied on the basis of if Execs think you will get 2 thumbs up
