Promoters started moving in the direction of scripted fights with fake personas because actual fights are boring and the fake stuff is far more entertaining.
The problem is that it worked only so long as kayfabe was intact. Now it's gone and a lot of the illusion is lost for those who care about such things. But as time moves on, MMA will likely continue moving in the direction of pro-wrestling, same as pro-wrestling did because, at the end of the day, what's the point of a real fight when a fake one can be more lucrative and give the viewer more bang for their buck.
