Not like they could be more poor and hard-working than they already were, being truck farmers & mill workers. The Depression/New Deal actually improved their lives, bringing TVA electricity, work opportunities like CCC, WPA. His brothers were farm hands but cos one had a knack for writing and another was a natural w/clearing-making farm roads, the writer got hired for the Tour Guides series as a researcher & the other was hired to build highways. If the stock market hadn't crashed, they'd still been bailing hay and picking veg and cotton.
