I just realized something: Vince is gone now. So why is WWE still keeping this guy in commentary? I thought him being Vince's favorite puppet was what kept him around so long; does Triple Nose like him too? Why not force him into a backstage role or something?

Wrestling fans have simply grown accustomed to him now
You can't be anywhere consistently for almost three decades and have people not at least get used to you - even if they initially hated you
People moreso begrudgingly respect him for his long tenure in WWE rather than for his actual commentary skills
The man put in work even if it wasn't the best work

Cole had plenty of good calls in the early and mid-2000s when Heyman was coaching him and Tazz
This is one of my favorites, especially the end when Big Show & Kane are about to put Batista through the announcer's table. I wish Cole still had this level of passion and energy in his voice today

This is a good point actually
Lawler's on-air heart attack immediately killed Cole's heel gimmick, and I think a lot of fans gained respect for Cole for how he handled things for the rest of that night
Ever since that happened, people still criticize Cole for his mid-at-best commentary and his botches, but despite that a lot more people still generally respect him now compared to before
