It depends whether you're talking about your personal favorites or talking about the most popular/important wrestlers of all time. If it's that first one, then yeah most people today wouldn't even be able to recognize Thesz. But if it's option #2, Thesz should absolutely be there.

If he was that popular/important shouldn’t he have any sort of cultural imprint? Babe Ruth was 100 years ago and people still know who he was and what he did. People understand why Babe Ruth was important. Thesz isn’t even that far back in time compared to that or any number of sports guys, musicians or just any famous people in general. I’m not suggesting wrestling started in the early 80’s. Stuff did pave the way. If it was vitally important it though it would have been passed down and transmitted to us today. People would seek it out, they’d appreciate it and learn about it. You can find videos or articles in droves about Muhammad Ali/Cassius Clay, about Broadway Joe Namath guaranteeing a Super Bowl win. People are still jerking off to Marilyn Monroe and her image is worth millions and millions. Goldust is a bigger part of the collective consciousness.

I think anyone with an interest in the history of professional wrestling would at least know who Lou Thesz was. And back when he was active, a lot more people would have been familiar with him. I'm not saying he would be number one in popularity, that spot would probably belong to Hogan. But Thesz was probably the greatest and most popular of the old territory champions after Flair.

This is correct. The majority of wrestling fans only know Thesz as some ancient guy that must have made up the move Stone Cold and Randy use. Or maybe good old JR would shout shades of Lou Thesz sometimes. I’ve been watching wrestling forever and of course I know the guy was a legendary shooter and Strangler Lewis was his manager and he innovated a bunch of moves. But then I realized I actually had no clue what the guy looks like. The imagine in my head was actually Strangler Lewis and I had zero clue what Thesz looked like. He could have handed me a sticker at Walmart today and I wouldn’t have known. I don’t think I could put him on a list in good faith no matter what.

The last slot could be Vince, Cena, Rock, Savage. Maybe even Undertaker. It’s gotta be someone that was over and even a non wrestling fan can easily know. Macho Man transcended Wrestling. Taker and Cena kind of did too. Vince and Rock for sure did. Rock happened to be a bigger movie star than he was a wrestler though.
