One of the closer/more natural mediums to compare it to, MMA, went in the opposite direction. How did wrestling become so “woke”? It was pretty conservative-coded, though in a trashy, proto-MAGA way, through the 2000s at least. Not debating whether it’s good or not, but it definitely has happened.
