Real heads know that BIX spent most of the 2000s trying to prove that Meltzer had the wrong numbers for WM3 and that it was actually 93k.
I forget the exact details or even which side of the argument this falls on, but doesn't it have something to do with Pope John Paul II's visit to the same arena having a worked number so WWF had to use a worked number as well?

Dave's 78k number has always been stupid. The Silverdome had a capacity of 83k to begin with, and they had a lot of floor seating added to it for WM3. If the attendance was only 78k big sections of the upper deck would have needed tarped off or clearly be empty, and that's simply not the case as is clear in any photo.

It seems clear that WWE exaggerated by at least 5,000 people, but the idea that there was a significant gulf between the crowds at WrestleMania III and the papal mass seems unlikely based on newspaper reports and photos of both events.

The best part about the Wembley numbers is that someone actually went out of their way to do research and find a credible source. And given that it was the number the local government had, it's probably one of the more reliable numbers we've ever had.
