This is correct.
You can have the best policies in the world, but the moment you start pushing shit that goes against people's basic principles, all bets are off and no one is going to vote for you.
Yeah, maybe you make the best sandwich in the world. But when you make it clear you're going to wipe some shit on a random part of that sandwich, no one wants to eat it.
They'll gladly go down the street and buy the crappy sandwich with no shit in it given that option.
Don't insist on trying to force people to accept that men can be women and that women can be men. You can have the best psychological and scientific arguments in favor of such a position and people aren't going to hop on board because it's just a step too far in relation to what people are comfortable with.
