the landscape at the time was Super Cena dominating the real WWE championship scene. the WHC/Smackdown title was seen as the secondary one, but still upper midcard. Bryan was pushed well, won multiple champions including the WHC title. It's that after 10 years the main event scene for the WWE title consisted of Cena, Orton, Beeg, Rocky and then Batista was coming back. The fans were frustrated the Bryan was clearly over as a heel and a babyface, every angle he was involved in got over. He had that unique combination of being a serious wrestler who could be a comedy heel, serious heel, chicken shit heel but also an underdog babyface. I can't think of many wrestlers who pulled that off so seemlessly.
