I'll admit I've only had a little exposure to NWA but seems me there a bit stuck in a rut trying to be both modern small fed and old timey wrestling production circa 1980. Part of it is because of the roaming talent wanting to do their own stuff.
What would really help is to start finding ways to stand out from the rest without turning into backyard wrestling and still finding a reason to be in a ring so that your shows have a reason to have one.
Lucha Underground is beloved because it had it's own in universe story that could have been stolen straight out of anime, Danhausen doing interviews in character was a big leap for GCW, those Soft Ground wrestling dudes did relatively well by offering absolutely stupid wrestling in a pile of mud - what I'm saying that they'd need to figure out an attraction that is not just whats in the ring but the atmosphere .
