He was essentially the culmination of 70's wrestling, more fighting for leverage and little to know strikes. Nothing off the top rope, a big move would be an atomic drop or butterfly suplex.
He could brawl with bruisers like Sgt. Slaughter and Stan Hansen. Getting color and whatnot. He could wrestle on the mat with Flair or Inoki, selling back body drops and toe holds. He even found his way into pseudo shoot and Bati-Bati wrestling in UWF and BattleArts in Japan.
Unlike a lot of guys in that era though he was an Ironman with absurd power. Flair could do broadways and Hansen could toss guys on their ass... but Backlund could go an hour and then hoist a guy up with one arm.
