I think reality is really starting to settle in for once for this jackass. He made a brief mention of people shitting on him being a dad but I think subconsciously he realized he's been a piece of shit to his son. Maybe in his own twisted way, he did have some type of love for his son, but everything that's happened inbetween now and the incident formed a crack in his mind. He's livestreaming to try to get away from it but he just looks goddamn pathetic. All that fighting in the ring and what drives fear in the heart of a battle hardened ex-fighter is the thought of confronting the emotional front of the situation, his son and himself.

The truth is that the promotion sent out an untrained shitter they knew had a concussion and specifically told him to direct his attack at someone else in the promotion without properly explaining the or smartening him up. Impairment by concussion is something that's been brought up. If they go with it at trial, we can expect to see dueling expert witnesses. I can't imagine him getting 100 percent off on that either.

Still, both angles are possible to reduce his sentence.

One of the possible outcomes is that Raj sues Raja and Rikishi for negligence in civil court.

No, people react quite differently especially if they haven't been trained in MMA and practiced being battered about the head, that is why MMA has refs, they are the ones who decide when someone has been hit in the head too much, if you ever watch an MMA fight the ref is the one who would be jumping in to stop things after the first unreturned punches, but the ref didn't do that and MMA fighters aren't trained to be in on the work, they are trained to pummel the opponent until the ref tackles and bear hugs you to force a stop to the bout. They didn't bother to train him the entertainment way or train the ref to stop things the MMA way, so its entirely on the promotion's sloppy shoppery for telling him to get in the ring and beat up the other guy without training him to do it safely.

What don't you understand? Prosecutors charge what they can prove. Under California law you need to do more than beat the shit out of someone, even viciously or injuring them seriously, to convict on a murder charge and you have to be able to prove intent to go that far. Talking about hitting someone until you're pulled off is not a sure case to clear that standard. If you argue he's a trained MMA fighter, hands are deadly weapons blah blah (even though he has a 0-1 record), defense could argue why he didn't choose more purposeful means (chocking, for example) if killing was actually his intent. Instead they would charge something they're surer they can get a conviction on (assault, battery).

I've started to run into this "MMA mode/instinct" argument in regards to this story and I find it absolutely infuriating. MMA fighters are not some programmed golems that keep hitting someone until they are pulled off, it's a conscious decision that they make to ensure that they win the match. They do it in professional matches, not in training or sparring, and someone like Raja should know the difference between a wrestling ring and an octagon. And as you said, there are numerous occasions from pro matches where fighters stop and/or ask the ref when their opponent is no longer defending themselves.
