The logic of the gimmick falls apart when the viewer wonders “how isn’t he getting paid from this” or “how does he get to the shows” I would assume

Nah, he gets paid, just not enough to get a roof over his head. He has a family "back home" to support. Or maybe he gets jumped and mugged every episode. Or the bosses find reasons not to pay him. Or he doesn't actually work there and everything he does is 'unofficial'. Plenty of easy ways that are good enough for pro wrestling.

Not really no.
If you are in a major promotion, everyone knows you are likely making more money than 99% of the attending working audience so the audience can’t empathize at all.

This can only work in literal backyard mudshow promotions. That being said, it’s a gimmick with a very very low ceiling.
